IceStat Pilot: Turn Game Film + Simple Tracking Into Clear Coaching Decisions
IceStat helps amateur programs quantify the plays that actually matter — zone entries, transitions, defensive reads, puck battles, shot quality, and more — and translates them into clean dashboards your staff and players can act on.

WHO THIS PILOT IS FOR
For teams who want clarity without enterprise complexity.
- Want better line decisions, development plans, and accountability
- Already review film (or want a lightweight way to start)
- Don’t have the time or budget for pro-level tracking platforms
- Want dashboards that coaches will actually use
THE PROBLEM
Most amateur programs are stuck in an insight gap.
Coaches care about the details that drive wins — but those details are hard to quantify:
- Who consistently exits under pressure?
- Who creates clean entries vs. dump-ins?
- Who is driving transition speed and possession?
- Who is reliably making defensive reads and stopping chances early?
Without structure, staff are forced to rely on memory, vibes, or scattered notes — and it’s difficult to coach development with confidence.
THE ICESTAT APPROACH
Track the actions → blend into coaching-ready metrics → drill into the “why.”
IceStat combines two layers:
- Core Actions Tracked (what happened on the ice)
- Blended Metrics (what it means in a coaching context)
Example blended outputs:
- Offensive Impact (how often a player creates O-zone advantages)
- Defensive Impact (how reliably they prevent breakdowns)
- Effort/Engagement (puck battles, pressure, backcheck events, etc.)
- Overall Impact (a single roll-up for quick decisions)
Then you can drill down into the raw drivers (entries, exits, reads, battles, shot quality, etc.) to coach precisely.
HOW THE PILOT WORKS
Option A (Recommended): Coach-Led Tracking → IceStat Dashboards
Lightweight tracking your staff can handle — with dashboards your program can use immediately.
Step 1 — You get the IceStat tracking template
A structured game template designed to be:
- Simple enough for a coach/assistant/manager to complete
- Detailed enough to generate real insight
- Consistent across games for trending
Step 2 — Your staff logs the game (during or after)
Tracking can be done live from the bench/stands or after with film.
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s consistent capture of the actions that matter.
Step 3 — You send the completed file to IceStat
We collect your tracking file(s) and run them through the IceStat model.
Step 4 — IceStat delivers dashboards + insights
You receive clean dashboards that show:
- Player Snapshot report cards
- Player Trends over time
- Team-level tendencies and drivers
- Drilldowns by category (entries, exits, reads, transitions, etc.)
Step 5 — Optional: review call + action plan
We can do a short staff walkthrough to translate findings into:
- lineup notes
- practice priorities
- individual development focus
Option B (Upgrade): You Send Video → IceStat Tracks It
If your program prefers minimal workload, you can send game video and IceStat will handle the tracking directly (capacity limited).
This option is ideal if:
- you want higher consistency and detail
- you don’t have staff time to track games
- you want deeper tagging tied to video moments
SMART TRACKING: LOGGING ONLY KEY SHIFTS
More insight. Less tracking.
IceStat’s pilot does not require logging every second of every game.
Instead, we focus on key shifts — the moments that actually drive coaching decisions.
WHAT IS A “KEY SHIFT”?
- High-tempo offensive zone pressure
- Controlled or failed zone entries/exits under pressure
- Defensive-zone sequences leading to chances or recoveries
- Transition-heavy shifts (rushes, counters, odd-man looks)
- Puck battles and net-front engagements
- Special teams or late-game situations
- Shifts that clearly swing momentum (positive or negative)
These are the shifts coaches already remember — IceStat simply structures them.
WHY THIS WORKS
Tracking only key shifts dramatically reduces workload without sacrificing signal.
- Most actionable insight comes from high-leverage moments
- Low-impact shifts add noise, not clarity
- Coaches think in moments — not averages
By focusing on key shifts:
- Tracking time drops significantly
- Consistency improves
- Insight quality increases
HOW KEY-SHIFT TRACKING FITS THE PILOT
You choose the depth — IceStat handles the synthesis.
Option A: Key Shifts Only (Most teams start here)
- Log only high-impact or notable shifts
- Ideal for limited staff time
- Still produces strong directional insight and trends
Option B: Expanded Tracking (As capacity grows)
- Add more shifts or categories over time
- Increase confidence and resolution in the metrics
- Seamlessly builds on the same framework
The dashboards adapt automatically — no rebuild required.
WHAT YOU'LL TRACK
IceStat focuses on coaching-relevant actions, not fluff. Categories include:
Possesion + Movement
- Transitions (rush involvement, transition attempts)
- Zone entries (controlled vs. dump-in, entry success)
- Zone exits (controlled vs. uncontrolled, exit success)
Offense
- Shot attempts / shots on goal
- Shot quality indicators (high-danger chances, slot passes)
- Offensive zone touches and creation events
Defense
- Defensive recoveries and disrupted plays
- Stick checks / blocks
- Breakdown prevention and read-driven events
Compete / Engagement
- Puck battles (won / total)
- Forecheck pressure events
- Backcheck events
- Net-front presence events
Discipline / Possession Risk
- Giveaways / takeaways
- Backcheck events
(You’ll receive a clean tracking guide so staff know exactly what counts.)
WHAT YOU GET
Pilot Deliverables
1) Player Snapshot / Dashboard
A report card-style view for each player that blends:
- Offensive / Defensive / Effort / Overall impact
- Category drilldowns (entries, exits, reads, battles, etc.)
- Context like position, line/pair, and TOI inputs (if provided)
2) Player Trends Dashboard
Spot development and consistency over time:
- Who is improving (and why)
- Who is trending down
- Which skills are stable vs. volatile
3) Team Tendencies & Drivers
Understand your identity and what’s actually happening:
- Entry/exit style and success
- Transition frequency and quality
- Defensive stability vs. breakdown risk
- Compete/engagement patterns
4) Coaching Notes → Actionable Focus Areas
A short summary of:
- top 3 team priorities
- top player opportunities
- “quick wins” for next practice/game
Sample dashboards
Note: not all metrics and visuals will be available in this pilot. Dashboards will differ.

PILOT TIMELINE
Week 0: kickoff + template + tracking guide
Weeks 1–3: track games (recommended 3–6 games for signal)
Ongoing: IceStat publishes dashboards as games come in
End of pilot: staff walkthrough + next-step recommendations
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
To run the pilot smoothly:
- A primary staff point-of-contact
- Game schedule + opponent info
- Tracking files submitted after each game (Option A) or game video (Option B)
- Basic roster context (lines/pairs, position, jersey #)
WHY THIS WORKS
Analytics should reduce coaching workload — not increase it.
IceStat is built around a simple belief:
If coaches can quickly see what matters and why it’s happening, decisions get easier, development gets faster, and feedback becomes objective.

FAQ
How much time does tracking take?
With the IceStat template and guide, tracking becomes repeatable and efficient. Many teams start by tracking only priority categories and expand over time.
Do we need perfect data?
No. Consistency matters more than perfection. The pilot is designed to be practical for real teams.
Can players get an individual version?
Yes — the same framework can support an individual player snapshot and development plan (great for advancement-minded athletes).

Clear insights. Better decisions. Smarter development.
